FREE DIGITAL TV IN CARBON COUNTY!
Carbon County is now broadcasting, on a test basis, free, over-the-air, digital
television channels from its Star Point, Ford Ridge, and Helper communication
sites. These channels are the Salt Lake area channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14,
16, and 30. When this project is finished, sometime before February 2009, almost
every home in the Carbon County area will have the capability of receiving FREE,
over-the-air, DIGITAL television channels, each of which has one or more SUB channels
for a total of as many as 22 channels. Scofield and Clear Creek are still a work
in progress. Hopefully, they will be on-line sometime in 2007.
Disclaimer: These channels are in the TESTING PHASE ONLY and may be changed
or even turned off at times.
WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO RECEIVE THE NEW OVER-THE-AIR DIGITAL TELEVISION SIGNALS IN
YOUR HOME?
- You will need a reasonably good UHF television antenna and feed line
(COAX cable). If you have a splitter in-line to feed more than one
television, you may need a good low-noise UHF pre-amp or distribution amp.
Position the antenna's orientation so it faces our transmitting sites (see
diagram). One thing to remember while you are testing your antenna -- if you
have a reasonably good picture on the UHF analog channels now, using your
existing UHF antenna, you will have a PERFECT picture with the digital
television.
- You will need either a television with a built-in receiver labeled as ATSC,
or a stand-alone digital ATSC box that will sit on top of your regular analog
TV.
Most large-screen TV's on the market today have the ATSC (digital receiver)
built in. If you are planning to buy a new television in the near future, be
sure to look for the ATSC (digital receiver) listed on the box or display.
If you buy a TV that says "HDTV Monitor" or "HDTV Ready", then it most
likely DOES NOT have a digital receiver built in, and you will need to
purchase a stand-alone ATSC box. Be sure to ask your sales person to verify
whether or not it has the digital television receiver built in.
For televisions that do not have a built-in "ATSC" digital tuner, there is a
"SET TOP" box that plugs into your existing TV just like a DVD player does.
The SET TOP boxes are a bit expensive, selling for about $200 at Wal-Mart,
Circuit City, and other places.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
The analog (NTSC) television technology we currently use is over 50 years
old. With the Federal Government selling off the television channels between
Channel 51 and 69 to make room for more cell phones and the like, we have
had TV channels taken away, which leaves us with a lot less room for the
same number of television channels.
The new digital television technology is not affected like analog TV by
other television transmitters outside a given distance which lets us re-use
TV channels more often.
The Federal Communication Commission has given broadcasters a deadline of
February, 2009 to TURN OFF the analog channels that we have now.
So in a nutshell we are being forced to make these changes, but the
changes in the long-run will be a great improvement in our local FREE
over-the-air television.
Carbon County will maintain the existing analog television as best we can
without investing large amounts of money in a system that has been mandated
to terminate shortly.
